A group of radiophysicists, physicists, technical, and administrative staff with experience in research activities in the area of radiation protection (RP) of patients and medical professionals, as well as in quality control aspects of medical exposures with ionising radiation.
Participation in numerous research projects of the European Commission and Spanish Public Bodies, being responsible for many of these projects: Radiological risks in radiodiagnosis, optimisation of RP and image quality in radiology, RP in paediatric radiology, RP in fluoroscopy-guided interventional techniques, RP in digital radiology, radiological risk assessment of professionals in interventional techniques, auditing, and quality control in patient dosimetry, etc. Presence on the steering committees of several national and international organisations (including the European Commission) with competence in RP in medicine. Participation in the editorial committees of several scientific journals in his speciality.
Extensive university, extra-university, and international teaching experience in the area of PR in Interventional Radiology, Radiology, and Cardiology.
The group’s researchers have more than 125 articles cited in PubMed, 58 of them in the last 5 years.
The members of the group have experience in leading and managing research programmes and in interdisciplinary, inter-university, and international collaboration.
Eliseo Vañó is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Radiology at the Complutense University of Madrid.
He has been Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Head of the Medical Physics Department. He has served on the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), having chaired the Committee on Protection in Medicine. He is currently an emeritus member of the ICRP Main Committee.
He has been advisor on Radiation Protection at the General Directorate of Public Health of the Ministry of Health and member of the Spanish delegation to EURATOM and UNSCEAR. He continues to collaborate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organisation on several radiation protection programmes in the areas of interventional radiology and interventional cardiology. He is a member of several working groups of the European Society of Radiology in the “EuroSafe Imaging” programme and of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE). Prof. Vañó has received several awards from Spanish and European scientific societies, and the 2019 Sievert Award from the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA). He has led several research projects funded by the European Commission and national bodies.
